Therapeutic Massage Therapy That Targets Neck, Back & IT Band Pain
By North Central Massage & Aesthetics | July 24, 2026

A lot of our Phoenix clients tell us they leave feeling “lighter, more balanced, and completely rejuvenated, ” and that’s exactly what Targeted Therapeutic Massage is built for. This is therapeutic massage therapy that goes straight after the spots causing your day to day pain, like neck and shoulder knots, low back tightness, and that stubborn IT band pull that shows up after long commutes or workouts. We work in Downtown Phoenix (Roosevelt Row / Central City), and we also see plenty of people coming in from Tempe, Scottsdale, Glendale, Mesa, Chandler, and Paradise Valley when they want real change, not a quick rubdown.
Targeted Therapeutic Massage in 90 Minutes: what we actually focus on
Our Targeted Therapeutic Massage is a 90-minute session ($155) designed around a simple idea: your body doesn’t need the same pressure everywhere. It needs smart work in the places that are holding you back.
We start by listening. If your “problem” is neck pain but it’s really coming from forward head posture, upper traps, or a tight chest, we’ll chase the pattern, not just the symptom. Then we use a mix of hands-on therapy and tools to release adhesions and calm irritated tissue. That can include deep tissue, myofascial release, sports techniques, stretching, and joint-friendly mobilizations.
We also may bring in the Theragun, cupping, scrapping (gua sha style work for tissue), lymphatic drainage, and hot towels when it fits what your body needs that day. And you’ll go home with a 1-ounce bottle of custom organic essential oils for muscle, nerve, and joint discomfort, plus the remainder to keep using.
How this differs from a classic deep tissue massage: deep tissue is usually pressure-focused. Targeted therapeutic massage is outcome-focused. We still work deep when it’s helpful, but we’re always aiming for better movement and less pain, not just “more pressure.”
The benefits you’ll notice: pain relief, looser posture, better sleep
When people book massage and therapy, they’re usually not chasing “spa vibes.” They’re trying to get their body back. Here’s what comes up again and again with our targeted work.
1) Neck and shoulder tension that finally lets go
We see the classic desk-job pattern all the time in Downtown Phoenix: forward head posture, upper trap knots, jaw clenching, and that “world is on my shoulders” feeling. Clients describe it in plain language because it’s real. One person told us, “This lady absolutely knocked out my stress out of my shoulders.” That’s the goal, but we do it by finding which muscles are overworking and which ones have basically gone offline.
2) Low back relief without beating you up
Low back pain often isn’t just low back. Tight hips, glutes, and hamstrings can keep the pelvis pulled and the back irritated. We’ll work the whole chain, then add stretching and heat. In Phoenix’s hot, dry climate, people tend to run tight and dehydrated, so we pace the intensity and make sure the tissue softens instead of guarding.
3) IT band tightness that improves because we treat the cause
Most IT band pain responds best when we address the outside hip, glute med, and quad tension that feeds it. That’s where sports and therapeutic massage work shines. We may use cupping or scrapping to help tissue glide, then follow with targeted stretching so the improvement sticks.
4) Relief that lasts longer than “just that day”
A big reason people switch to massage therapy is they’re tired of temporary relief. We hear stories of chronic pain finally calming down for weeks after a session, not hours. One client put it bluntly: they’d “never had so much relief from a massage for so many weeks.” That’s what happens when we combine targeted manual work with follow-up care you can actually do at home.
“I’m always in chronic pain and she legit helped me so much. I have never had so much relief from a massage for so many weeks following my appointment.”

5) A calmer nervous system, not just looser muscles
People often tell us they leave “at peace, ” “rejuvenated, ” or like an “improved version” of themselves. That matters. When your nervous system settles, posture improves, breathing gets deeper, and sleep tends to follow. If you’re coming in after a convention, a long drive from Scottsdale or Chandler, or a hard training week, that downshift is part of recovery.
Is Targeted Therapeutic Massage right for your neck, back, or IT band?
This is a great fit if you’ve been stretching and foam rolling and still feel “stuck, ” or if your pain keeps coming back in the same spots. It’s also ideal when you want a session that’s therapeutic and still deeply relaxing. People come to us for chronic pain support, post-workout recovery, and that desk-job shoulder load that builds up fast.
Quick self-check: If turning your head feels tight, your low back is stiff getting out of the car, or the outside of your thigh nags after walking or running, targeted work usually makes more sense than a full-body relaxation-only session.
And if you’re visiting Downtown Phoenix (Roosevelt Row / Central City) for work or an event, a 90-minute session can be a smart reset before you’re right back in meetings, flights, or long drives.
Why people rebook with our team in Downtown Phoenix
North Central Massage & Aesthetics has been serving Phoenix for 5 years, and a lot of our growth has come from referrals. People talk. When they find a therapist who listens and can actually change how their body feels, they don’t keep it to themselves.
We also love working with out-of-town regulars. One client told us, “I come to Phoenix periodically. And I see Melissa every time I’m here.” That kind of loyalty only happens when results are consistent.
“Found my new masseuse, enough said! Happy to get in last minute on the same day.”

If you’re coming in from Tempe, Mesa, Glendale, Scottsdale, Chandler, or Paradise Valley, let us know what your week looks like and what you’re trying to fix. We’ll use the full 90 minutes to get you moving better, then send you out with simple home care so you don’t lose the progress as soon as you’re back in the car.

Your first session goes better when you tell us these 4 things
You don’t need a perfect explanation of what’s wrong. But a few details help us make your massage therapy session count.
- Where it hurts most, and where it refers (neck into shoulder, back into hip, hip into outside thigh).
- What makes it worse (sitting, driving, running, sleeping on one side).
- What you’ve tried already (stretching, chiropractic, PT exercises, foam rolling).
- How you want to feel after (less pain, easier rotation, looser legs, better sleep).
